Vacuum advance is somewhat necessary for street use, Jeff. But it really depends on what you are willing to compromise on. As previously stated, vacuum advance is good for gas milage, but that's more like a side benefit that its sole purpose. Fuel efficiency is at its best with the highest cylinder pressure with the least throttle opening. If there is vacuum, the timing will advance wehn you put the hose on it. Put it on a point HIGHER than the base plate of the carb. Any vacuum port at or near the level of the butterflies will be constant vacuum. Any port HIGHER than the butterflies will be regulated by the throttle. and do the 10* thing, all my 390's liked it a lot. FE It looks like someone put vacuum lines on this engine incorrectly. Connect the vacuum advance to the port with the blue cap on it, cap the other port, and retime. Go for around 6-8 degrees BTDC. You'll have to correct the idle as you do this.
