So I have a silly question because I have a hard time wrapping my brain around electrical stuff. I'm fixing my really hacked up wiring on a truck, and I need to wire the 12v + wire through a ballast resistor and then to the ignition coil. What I'm having a hard time understanding is how the physical wiring has to look. Does the resitor need to be physically in between the 12v+ source and the powered component to create the resistance, or does the resistor just need to be on the circuit? In my ch... Then run the new wire in it's place and re-tape the harness using non-adhesive vinyl tape. You can make it look totally factory. Note that virtually all "electrical tape" is a ... Hey all, was doing research today on a totally unrelated project and saw that MSD says you need a ballast resistor with stock point ignitions. I had ran the car a number of times without one, no problems at all. Does our pink resistor wire do the same job? Or do I need to throw one in and hook it up? Ballast resistor wiring diagram. [http://www.wrxinfo.com/service\_manuals/](http://www.wrxinfo.com/service_manuals/) Been researching some torque specs for suspension stuff and was surprised about the amount of misinformation and confusion out there across forums and videos. Here ya'll go, hope this helps some of you DIYers. A ballast, especially a choke ballast, limit current via inductance. A resistor restricts current flow. Could a resistor operate as a ballast in operations such as lighting? December 11, 2019 - The best location for the ballast resistor to be connected is close to the coil along the firewall. This will not only give you a better attachment point, but also keep you from having to run wires all over the engine compartment. Choose a location near the coil and mark your placement. The typical automotive ignition system prior to 1974 consisted of a coil and ballast resistor, with breaker points to interrupt the current flow when a spark was needed. The job of the ballast resistor was to inhibit current to a level that would not overheat the coil.
August 26, 2016 - You will most likely not get any warning of its failure; it may be working fine today and give out tomorrow. A quick and easy way to diagnose ballast resistor failure is to bypass it by running a temporary jumper wire from the battery to the coil. If it starts and remains running, you’ve ... November 16, 2008 - Hey dood, Diagram attached for wiring of points dizzy and coil with ballast resistor. The Coil - does not go direct to earth. (If you have connected it this way and also connected the Coil+ to Battery, the coil will be constantly drawing current and will overheat and also flatten the battery) ... Tried googling it with no luck. It was replaced with the resistor and the fan still only works on high. I just want to double check that the harness was wired correctly. Thanks !
Unsure how to tell if your Classic British Car has a ballast resistor or not? The Moss Motors Tech department has put together this video tip to show you how... Perhaps this will dispel some confusion. The ballast ignition system includes an external resistor (or resistor wire) in series with the voltage supply to the coil’s (+) terminal. A “standard” coil will have an internal resistance close to 3 ohms on its primary windings. April 8, 2017 - 1973 - 1979 F-100 & Larger F-Series Trucks - Ballast resistor or resistor wire? - I'm driving a 1974 ford f250 360 pre-electronic ignition, just replaced the ignition with the newest generation pertronix module and coil- what a huge difference in performance and mileage. grant4405 - 2022-01-01 2:28 PM Can I get back on this subject after many month absence about my new hi-speed starter. I stupidly mis-described it as having one wire but it has two. The original starter has one wire. November 5, 2021 - What is a Ballast Resistor and what does it do and why? A Ballast Resistor is an electrical device that reduces voltage to the coil so that more energy is available for the spark plugs during starting. Why would a Ballast Resistor be fitted in a car? Traditionally, ignition systems didn’t ...
The original car used a standard ignition circuit that incorporated a single or dual-point distributor. Most kits today will use an electronic distributor, and many use a multi-spark unit such as the MSD · When you hook up your system, check whether the distributor requires a ballast resistor.
