In stronger winds, you won't be able to fly the spinnaker as close to the wind because your boat will be overpowered by the spinnaker at the closer angles. If the wind

Spinnaker rigging diagram. Rig Tension Rig tension is applied using the jib halyard. In general terms, medium rig tension is required in light winds, maximum in the middle wind band and then ease it off as the boat becomes over-powered. Sailing your North spinnaker is fairly easy as long as you follow a few basic guides. First, always fly your spinnaker so that there is a 5″ - 6″ curl in the luff. It is much better to sail your spinnaker slightly eased and slightly under trimmed so that the slot between the spinnaker and the main will not be choked. Asymmetric spinnaker trimming is done using two sheets which lead to the aft quarters of the sailing dinghy and may have twinning lines that move the lead forwards when sailing on a broad reach as displayed in the asymetrical spinnaker setup in the asymmetric spinnaker rigging diagram. When running, this spinnaker is inefficient requiring ... Along with the spinnaker, a spinnaker pole, a halyard and hoisting system and sheets are needed. This whole rig requires skill in hoisting, setting and lowering the spinnaker. As seen in the spinnaker rigging diagram above, leading from each clew, the sheets run outside all the rigging to blocks and cleats on the side decks.

cruising spinnaker has a definite luff and leech, with the luff being the bit longer of the two. The sail is about 25% smaller in total area than a standard spinnaker, but it is about twice as big as a conventional 150% genoa. The cruising spinnaker is designed specifically to enhance a boat's downwind performance.

Rigging and Gybing an Asymmetric. Sailing with asymmetric spinnakers on sprit boats has become common in the last 10 years but there is a growing trend of using asymmetrics on conventional boats with standard spinnaker poles. While these sails are very efficient they do require somewhat different rigging, and gybing them is quite different.

Hoist the spinnaker; It seems daunting, but the principles of setting a symmetrical spinnaker are the same whether you're on a 420 dinghy or a fifty foot racer. You may have a few more lines, but the general process is: prep the spinnaker, connect the lines to the sail, hoist the pole on the windward side, then hoist and trim the sail.

To rig a spinnaker halyard, you have to install a block at the masthead. I chose a standard 40mm plastic block but extended it with a second, long D shackle to attach it to the top front masthead pin. You can also use a rigging toggle. The important thing is that the block must be able to swing both up and down and also to port and starboard.
